What is Communication?

Communication can be defined as a process that includes a sender and a receiver. The sender is responsible for encoding a message or adding meaning to a piece of information that she/he wants to convey. After that, the sender uses a mean such as telephones, letters, e-mails, or face-to-face interactions as platforms through which the encoded message is communicated. This medium of communication delivers to message to the receiver, who is then responsible for decoding the message by interpreting the information and details that the sender has tried to communicate. While the message is being decoded by the receiver, the receiver’s perceptions and existing experiences and knowledge tend to influence the way the message is decoded and perceived. In order for effective communication to take place, the sender needs to design a clear message and use an apt medium so that the receiver conceives it immediately and smoothly. Throughout the communication process, ‘noises’ tend to occur. These noises can be a poor internet connection or network that breaks the voice of the sender while she/he is communicating over the phone. Likewise, the relationships shared by the sender and the receiver plays a massive role in shaping how the intended message will be perceived. To illustrate, an employee who dislikes another one will never really try to comprehend the message that the other person is trying to communicate.
