What is Fake News?

In simple words, fake news is news or stories on the internet that are not true. We tend to share so many pieces of news and articles that we across on a regular basis, but we never stop to check if the news is reliable and valid. In many cases, the information we read through has perhaps been made up by political parties or crime groups in order to spread incorrect information to mislead the readers and possibly sway their existing perceptions. Due to a drastic rise in the number of social media users and platforms, nowadays, fake news spreads like wildfire, and before you know it, a completely false information is treated as the new reality. Fake news can often be dangerous because it is responsible for igniting prejudices against different cultures, religions, and even political parties. Moreover, as they appear to be very credible, we often fall into its trap and end up believing them. There are two types of fake news:

  1. False stories that are deliberately published or sent around, in order to make people believe something untrue or to get lots of people to visit a website. These are deliberate lies, and even the person writing them knows that they are made up.
  2. Stories that may have some truth to them, but they're not completely accurate. This is largely because the writers - for instance, journalists or bloggers - don't check all of the facts before publishing the story, or they may choose to exaggerate some of it.

Why is Identifying and Combatting Fake News Important?

  • Fake news can make people believe things that are completely untrue, causing them to develop incorrect perceptions.
  • Fake news that have been prepared by journalists who have not checked the facts can hamper the people’s trust in the media.
  • Fake news instigates us to develop a bubble of new reality with people following and believing the fake news. This reality may promote prejudices and intolerance, or radically ideological viewpoints. This can even disturb a nation’s democracy.
  • Many political leaders use fake news to influence our voting preferences. This may urge us to select leaders based on misleading social media posts, instead of their actual capabilities and policy promises.
  • Companies may make wrong strategic or product decisions based on fake news about market conditions or competitors. This can turn out to be expensive and time consuming for companies that are not able to differentiate between false and true news. Thus, our online training course on identifying and combatting fake news will be very helpful.
  • Fake news can be developed by competitors to soil the company’s reputation, which will perturb sales and customer loyalty levels.
