What is Delegation?

Delegation in management in an organisation refers to the technique of assigning a task or placing the responsibility of a duty’s completion upon a subordinate’s shoulders. The importance of delegation is high, as making the right delegation decisions by passing on the role to the right employee, secures an organisation’s intention of appeasing its objectives. A poor delegation process can often delay the fulfilment of a task and even induce the creation of a rather unsatisfactory outcome. Effective delegation and proper communication go hand in hand, as a delegated task will only be understood and implemented if the requirements were clearly explained, thus erasing any prospective scopes of misinterpretation. Consequently, a healthy relationship is developed in the workplace, as accepted delegation often indicates that the managers or supervisors have a significant knowledge of their subordinates’ capabilities.

Why is Delegation Important?

Delegation, or the act of empowering and assigning responsibilities to other employees is of paramount value in projects or teams wherein multiple individuals and tasks are involved. Delegation is important because of the following factors:

  • Passing on responsibilities will curb managers from overburdening themselves. If managers stress themselves too much, then the amount of efforts they can assign for tasks that must be performed by managers will be hampered.
  • Delegating duties often makes the employees feel important and capable as they obtain a sense of importance and attention from the manager. This inevitably accelerated their motivation levels and convinces them to perform better.
  • Quite often, delegating tasks to the right person may also mean that she/he will be able to carry it out more efficaciously because while the managers may be in charge of the team or project, they may not be specifically skilled in every aspect of an activity or strategy.
